JEHOVAH – NISSI (The Lord Our Banner)

“And it came to pass, When Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah – nissi:”? Exodus 17:11, 15

Israel faces their very first battle since the Exodus. Amalek has come to do battle with God’s people. Moses stands on the top of a hill over-looking the battle as General Joshua leads the troops below. In Moses’ hand is the rod of God. When Moses holds up the rod, Israel wins. When his strength fails and the rod comes down, they lose. So Aaron and Hur seat Moses on a rock and help him to keep his hands in the air with the rod of God held high. That rod was the banner of God. Moses names the place JEHOVAH – NISSI, which means “The Lord Our Banner Of Victory.”

God was teaching Israel that He is their Banner of victory. He is the One that will make them victorious over their ememies.

We cannot lose as long as we understand that the battle is God’s and He guarantees the victory (Deuteronomy 20:1-4). We are engaged in a great spiritual battle (Galatians 5:17; Ephesians 6:12). Our assurance of final victory is JEHOVAH – NISSI. We fight under His banner and in His strength. We cannot hope to defeat the world, the flesh and the Devil without the victorious power of JEHOVAH – NISSI (II Chronicles 20:15).

  1. Bro Chris,

I just preached on this thought this last Wednesday. The Lord has led me to preach on the some of the names of Jehovah. Last week was Jehovah-Jireh, and this week was Jehovah-Nissi. I am thankful the Lord has given us the Victory.
